Anemone japonica

Japanese anemone

Not too many flowers truly belong to the fall season, but these won’t start blooming until temperatures begin to cool—and in they also grow in shade. For the best display, full morning sun is probably ideal, but we don’t recommend afternoon sun for this member of the Ranunculaceae (buttercup) family. Choose your spot carefully, though, as Japanese anemones spread through underground runners. If you give them plenty of room to form a sizeable drift, they will not only reward you with beautiful flowers in fall, but serve as an attractive ground cover for most of the rest of the year.
