Aquilegia spp.

Columbine

We love columbines so well that we encourage them to grow literally everywhere in our garden. What’s more surprising is that they actually can grow in almost all sites—many bloom equally well in both shady and sunny spots. Like other members of the Ranunculaceae (buttercup) family, they prefer cool weather, flowering in late spring and early summer, before hot weather arrives. If you cut them back after flowering, you can enjoy a second round of blooms in late summer or autumn.
