Brunnera macrophylla

Siberian Bugloss

If you have a lot of shade, you must grow brunneras; if not, you should grow them anyway. There’s a lot to like about a tough shade plant with bold green foliage, often streaked or coated with iridescent silver. But the real show is in spring, when they bloom for months before most other herbaceous plants are even budding. If you want the foliage to keep looking great during the summer, they do require regular water, but we often neglect this. They perk up in the fall, and perform just as well in the following spring.
