Eriophyllum lanatum

Oregon Sunshine

We visited the rock garden at Christchurch Botanical Garden, in New Zealand, and one of the stars of the show was this beautiful Oregon native. Also called wooly sunflower, the silvery foliage helps the plant to be exceptionally drought-tolerant. We saw gorgeous drifts of it hiking on the side of Mt. Ashland. Although this plant is native to our region, it won’t grow just anywhere in our gardens. Try to simulate the conditions of a rocky, exposed mountainside and you’ll be golden.
