Daylilies

One of my early gardening memories is helping my mother transplant and divide daylilies. By this, I mean that we dug them up and left most of them lying around in a pile for months. None of them appeared to be the least bit bothered by this treatment, and when they were finally planted, that garden was full of daylily blooms every year afterward. With old-fashioned columbines self-seeding and hybridizing all around them, nothing seemed at all wanting from spring through summer.
